Mount Holyoke is committed to bringing together a team of faculty whose teaching, advising, and scholarship brings the academic program to life. In addition to traditional faculty positions, we also offer several other categories.
Mount Holyoke's fellowship program offers dissertation fellowships and post-doctoral fellowships to those who will contribute to increasing diversity at Mount Holyoke by increasing our ethnic and racial diversity, maximizing the educational benefits of diversity and/or increasing the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of students.
Mount Holyoke is a member of the Consortium for Faculty Diversity (CFD). The Consortium is committed to increasing the diversity of students, faculty members and curricular offerings at liberal arts colleges with a particular focus on enhancing the diversity of faculty members and of applicants for faculty positions. Appointments to the fellowships are made by CFD member institutions according to local needs and local program guidelines under the general framework for dissertation fellowships and post-doctoral fellowships described by the Consortium.
We invite all interested faculty in all disciplines of the liberal arts and engineering to submit applications. Applications are pooled centrally for all member institutions to access. While there is no general application deadline, all applications received by October 31 of each year will be given fuller consideration. Fellowship recipients must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents committed to and willing to contribute to enhancing the diversity of Consortium colleges and their faculties. Furthermore, candidates should have no more than five years of teaching or relevant experience before the start date of the most recent fellowship. Two types of residential fellowship awards are available under this program:
The dissertation fellowship is intended for scholars who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. or the M.F.A. except the dissertation. This fellowship is intended for scholars in the final stage of their dissertation and aims, above all, to help the fellow complete the final requirements for the degree during the year of residency. Dissertation fellows will receive compensation equivalent to the compensation of a starting one-year instructor at the host institution. Mentoring of teaching will be provided. Modest funds could be made available to finance proposed research and scholarship. (At Mount Holyoke, a start-up account of $3,000 will be provided to each fellow.) Modest funds, if available, allocated for these activities will be subject to the usual institutional procedures. Dissertation fellows will be expected to teach the equivalent of one semester-long course during the academic year, participate in functions such as departmental seminars, and interact regularly with students.
The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for scholars who have been awarded the Ph.D. or M.F.A. no later than the beginning of the fellowship year and no earlier than five years before the beginning of the fellowship year. Postdoctoral fellows will receive compensation commensurate with the salary of a full-time, one-year faculty member with comparable qualifications. Modest funds could be made available to finance proposed research, mentoring of teaching, and scholarship. (At Mount Holyoke, a start-up account of $3,000 will be provided to each fellow.) The funds allocated for these activities will be subject to the usual institutional procedures. Postdoctoral fellowship recipients will be expected to teach up to 60% of a full-time faculty's course load at a host institution (at Mount Holyoke, post-doctoral fellows will teach three courses per year), participate in departmental seminars, and interact regularly with students.

Research Associates are qualified individuals seeking a connection with Mount Holyoke to further their research or academic agenda. Eligible candidates are those with active academic interests holding advanced post-baccalaureate degrees, including those who previously taught full-time at one of the Five Colleges, partners or spouses of faculty members employed at one of the Five Colleges, and independent scholars in the Pioneer Valley without an appointment at one of the Five Colleges. Sponsorship from, or a connection to, one of Mount Holyoke’s academic departments and programs is required.
During the period of appointment, all Research Associates are expected to be in residence in the Five College area and to collaborate with colleagues based at one or more of the Five College institutions. Research Associates will have access to Five College archival and other library resources. This is an unpaid appointment; travel, housing, and living expenses are the responsibility of the Research Associate. Office space and Mount Holyoke email addresses are not available.
Research Associates who have previously held full-time faculty status at Mount Holyoke may be eligible to submit grant proposals with principle investigator status through the Office of Sponsored Research with the approval of the Dean of Faculty. In these cases, lab or office space may be made available. Any salaries paid to a Research Associate as a result of receiving a grant will be in compliance with Mount Holyoke policies for compensation. These positions will carry staff status and benefits where applicable.
We invite candidates, and nominations from departments or programs for Mount Holyoke’s Research Associate Program to submit materials for consideration. Local scholars, research scientists, and creative artists with active projects involving research, teaching, or public engagements are welcome to apply.
Appointments are made throughout the year, for a period of two years. Applications from candidates will require a project proposal (up to three pages in length), a curriculum vitae, and contact information for two professional references. Project proposals should include 1) statement about the contribution to and significance of the project or dissertation for research and teaching the specific discipline, 2) a detailed description of the project or dissertation and timeline, 3) a statement about the contribution and significance of your project or dissertation for research and teaching in the field and 4) how an affiliation with Mount Holyoke College will advance the project or dissertation. Please also provide the name(s) of any professional or personal faculty partner(s) in the Five Colleges.
An Associateship may be renewed or extended with the approval of the sponsoring department and the Dean of Faculty. Sequential applications must demonstrate significant progress and benefit of continued affiliation with Mount Holyoke.
