Debra Martin Chase ’77 wins for “The Outsiders”

Mount Holyoke College alum Debra Martin Chase ’77 won her third Tony award for producing “The Outsiders,” the best musical of 2024.

Debra Martin Chase ’77 is a three-time Tony winner. At the seventy-seventh annual Tony Awards on June 16, 2024, “The Outsiders,” which Chase co-produced, won best musical.

This is the third year in a row she has won a Tony for co-producing a Broadway show. In 2023, Chase won this award for her work on the musical “A Strange Loop,” and in 2022, she won for co-producing the Broadway revival of “Topdog/Underdog” by Suzan-Lori Parks ’85.

Based on the novel by S.E. Hinton, “The Outsiders” takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, when Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their Greaser family of outsiders battle rival gang the Socs. The musical won against “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “Suffs” and “Water for Elephants.”

The musical also took home awards for best direction, best lighting design and best sound design. "The Outsiders" is currently playing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City.
