Name: Zoe Snow ’15 Hometown: New York City Major: Biology/pre-med Minor: Politics |
Campus involvement/activities: Head class agent for the class of 2015, Orientation Board member, intragroup dialogue facilitator, organic chemistry peer tutor, Student Philanthropy Committee cofounder, dancer for the MHC dance senior thesis projects.
What are you most proud of accomplishing at MHC? I am proud of many things, including establishing all of the amazing connections I have here, developing the Orientation program to be more inclusive and accessible to a wider range of students, and pushing myself out of my comfort zone in order to grow and change as a person. Also, as head class agent, I cofounded the Student Philanthropy Committee and have raised the senior giving percentages to 33 percent. I was honored that my work serving on the Orientation Board and Class Board, as well as my commitment to the MHC community, earned me a Student Leadership and Service Award.
Favorite course that you thought you might not like: My first-year seminar was an English class on Sherlock Holmes. As a prospective pre-med student, I wasn't looking forward to taking English, but I ended up learning so much from my professor, Jenny Pyke, and improving my writing skills. It was really helpful having a professor be so invested in me in only my first year. To this day, it is still one of the most fun classes I've taken, and Professor Pyke recently hosted a minireunion to honor the graduating seniors.
Best takeaway from internship or research experiences: The summer after my sophomore year, I interned at a dance company instead of a more typical pre-med internship. I developed my professional work ethic and got exposed to cultural diplomacy and initiatives that helped hone my interest in public health. I was able to build and apply my skills the following summer by interning at a hospital.
Postgraduation plans: This summer, I will be a summer public health scholar at Columbia University. There, I will take public health classes, participate in an internship at a nonprofit health organization, and develop a final project relating to health disparities. I am excited to gain more experience in the public health sector and to work toward my goal of receiving an MD/MPH dual degree.
What you'd tell a prospective student about MHC: Choosing MHC was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Mount Holyoke is full of mentors and people who are rooting for your success and will ensure that you find your interests and passions while you are here. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone, meet people from all walks of life, and you will grow beyond what you thought you could achieve upon first entering college. Embrace the challenges, and you will go far.
