Mount Holyoke hosts second Girls & Women in Sports Day

Mount Holyoke College hosted its second annual Girls & Women in Sports Day on campus and introduced young people to a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, volleyball and equestrian activities.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, Mount Holyoke College's Kendall Sports & Dance Complex was lively as the College hosted its second annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day clinic. The Daily Hampshire Gazette was on hand to cover the event.

Young participants were introduced to a variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, field hockey, rowing and equestrian activities, all led by Mount Holyoke’s student-athletes.

Breena Proctor, head soccer coach at the College, emphasized the importance of events such as National Girls & Women in Sports Day for children. She said, “It’s just really important for the exposure, for them just to see college athletes and be able to look up to them and [think], ‘I can be them one day.’”

The event not only provided young people with an opportunity to engage in different sports but also allowed Mount Holyoke’s student-athletes to give back to the community. Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students Marcella Runell noted it was a chance for student-athletes to share their passion and enthusiasm for their sports with younger participants.

“For our student-athletes, it’s important for them to see themselves through this,” said Runell. “For them to be able to share the sport that they love — and the things that make them so happy and bring them joy — with younger kids, it’s a win-win.”
